Lower Clothing Prices Help Inflation Fall

Falls in food, alcohol, and clothing prices last month helped drive inflation to its lowest level in eight months in november.

The inflation rate fell to 3.2% from 3.6%, a larger fall than analysts expected.

Lower food prices were the main driver of the fall, “with decreases seen particularly for cakes, biscuits, and breakfast cereals”, according to Office for National Statistics (ONS) chief economist grant Fitzner.Alyssa Heath, a member of the Band of Bakers collective in Camberwell, said months of higher prices had influenced her choice of ingredients.

The group meets every couple of months to share things they have baked.

“Yoru typical items like flour and sugar are still pretty easy to justify,” she says.

“But when you get to things like nuts, dairy, or if you want any adventurous ingredients to add, those are a lot more expensive and you find yourself reaching for them less and less.”
