Samsung’s AI Washing Machine Feature Certified for Reducing Carbon Emissions

Samsung Electronics just earned Carbon Trust Assurance based on the “Decarbonizing the Use-Phase of Connected Devices” (DUCD) protocol. This certification recognizes the impact of its AI Energy Mode function on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in select washing machines^[2]. This is a landmark achievement – it’s the first time a product or feature globally has received this certification after self-reliant verification.

Samsung’s Ongoing Dedication

Samsung has consistently focused on establishing clear, systematic ways to evaluate and manage GHG emissions from household appliances. As part of this effort, the company joined the DUCD initiative as a member in september 2022.

The DUCD initiative is spearheaded by Carbon Trust, a leading global climate consultancy. They collaborate with businesses, governments, and financial institutions to drive positive climate action. Working alongside other industry leaders,Carbon Trust developed the first industrial standard to evaluate,monitor,and reduce carbon emissions related to connected device usage. The verification was carried out following the specifications of the DUCD Secretariat.

AI Energy Mode optimizes washing machine performance by detecting the weight and soil level of laundry. It then adjusts water usage, detergent dosage, and wash time accordingly, minimizing energy consumption. This clever approach delivers powerful cleaning while significantly reducing environmental impact.

Samsung plans to expand the application of AI Energy Mode to more appliances in the future, furthering its commitment to sustainability.
