Early Peanut Introduction Can Prevent Allergies
Introducing peanut-containing foods to babies early is a key strategy for preventing peanut allergy. However, a study published December 18 in JAMA Network Open reveals many parents are confused about this approach and need better support. Incorrect beliefs cause some parents to avoid or postpone steps that could prevent allergy advancement.
“Some parents correctly understand that early peanut introduction trains the immune system to prevent peanut allergy,” explained Dr. Waheeda Samady, a pediatrician at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. “Others mistakenly believe the goal is to test for allergy-a misconception that increases fear of severe reactions and causes hesitation.”
Guidelines recommending early peanut introduction originated in 2017. Landmark research demonstrated this practice could reduce peanut allergies by over 80 percent. currently, about 2 percent of U.S. children have peanut allergy, and it’s the least likely food allergy to resolve on its own.
“Timing and consistency are crucial for allergy prevention,” Samady emphasized.
