flu and Bronchiolitis Epidemic Strains Hospitals in Bouches-du-Rhône
The flu and bronchiolitis epidemic in Bouches-du-Rhône is hitting hospitals hard, creating meaningful strain. Some are even comparing the situation too the peak of the Covid-19 epidemic in 2020.
“Right now, it’s simple: I pray I don’t go to the hospital, it’s so scary,” says Kader Benayed, departmental secretary of the Sud santé union for Bouches-du-Rhône. He explains that hospitals in the area are overwhelmed by a major outbreak of flu and bronchiolitis that’s been sweeping the region in recent weeks. This crisis feels eerily familiar to another one from five years ago.
“It’s very alarming,” Benayed adds. “It’s like during Covid, and it’s going to be worse, because during Covid we could at least use certain measures, like increased overtime, to cope. but today, we’re facing a chronic staff shortage. With holidays and these epidemics, services are quickly reaching capacity.”
The surge in cases is impacting emergency room activity. A significant portion of emergency room visits are now related to respiratory illnesses, especially among young children. This puts additional pressure on already stretched resources.
Hospitals are struggling to find enough beds for patients, and staff are working tirelessly to manage the influx. The situation is particularly concerning for vulnerable populations, such as infants and the elderly, who are more susceptible to severe complications from these illnesses.
Health officials are urging residents to get vaccinated against the flu and to take preventative measures, like frequent handwashing and wearing masks, to help slow the spread of the virus. They also advise people to consult their doctor if they experience symptoms of flu or bronchiolitis.
