Football Clubs Targeted by New “Transfer Scamming” Fraud

A fraud scheme is sweeping through the football world, and German professional clubs are among those affected! Public prosecutors and state criminal investigation offices are investigating, club bosses are frustrated and fighting against the misuse of their names. What’s it about?

The fraud is similar too “Love Scamming” (a type of digital marriage fraud), where victims are led to believe they’ve found love via platforms like WhatsApp, only to be tricked into transferring large sums of money. This scheme has now been adapted into “Transfer Scamming.”

Here’s how the scam works: fraudsters set up fake WhatsApp Business accounts using prepaid phones and stolen profile pictures, creating the impression they belong to someone like the sporting director of a German club from the Bundesliga or 2nd League. They also create fake email addresses that closely resemble the real ones used by the clubs. player agents are then contacted, and false interest is expressed in one of their clients.
