Gustavus Men’s hockey Falls to Saint Mary’s in Thrilling Overtime Battle
WINONA, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s hockey team suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 overtime loss to Saint Mary’s University on Friday night. The Gusties battled back from a two-goal deficit but ultimately fell short in the extra period.
Saint Mary’s struck first with a power-play goal from Jackson Bissonnette at the 8:25 mark of the first period.Gustavus responded quickly,as Van Sullivan scored just over two minutes later to tie the game at 1-1. The Cardinals regained the lead before the end of the period with a goal from Joey maro.
The second period saw Saint Mary’s extend thier lead to 3-1 with a goal from Tanner Mack. Though, Gustavus refused to back down. Elijah Last scored a power-play goal at 12:38 to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Gusties continued their momentum into the third period, tying the game at 3-3 with a goal from Kyle Nelson at the 7:14 mark. Neither team could find the game-winning goal in regulation, sending the game to overtime.
In overtime, Saint Mary’s ended the game with a goal from Colin Tvedt just 1:34 into the extra period.
Gustavus goaltender Ethan Boerje recorded 28 saves in the loss, while Saint Mary’s goaltender Kevin Hand made 32 saves for the win.
The Gusties fall to 7-4-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the MIAC. Saint Mary’s improves to 6-4-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the conference.
