Table of Contents

Southwestern Germany is bracing for a period of unsettled weather, with stormy conditions expected to bring a mix of black ice, snow, and potentially hurricane-force gusts. The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued warnings for the region, anticipating overcast skies and challenging travel conditions.

Current Conditions and Regional Variations

As of today, January 8, 2026, conditions vary across the southwest. Light snowfall is absolutely possible in many areas, transitioning to rain at lower and mid-elevations as the day progresses. Black ice is a significant concern, notably during the morning hours, and drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution.

Temperatures in Baden-Württemberg are currently ranging between 1 and 3 degrees Celsius (34-37°F). Southern Baden may see slightly warmer temperatures, reaching up to 6 degrees Celsius (43°F). However, a strengthening southwest wind will make conditions feel considerably colder. Severe squalls are expected, especially in mountainous regions like the Feldberg, with hurricane-force gusts possible. Despite the rising temperatures, up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) of fresh snow could accumulate in the Black Forest.

Tonight’s Forecast: Thaw and Continued Hazards

The night of Friday will likely bring widespread and heavy rainfall, even at higher altitudes. While temperatures will continue to rise – reaching 8 degrees Celsius (46°F) in the Upper Rhine and 2 degrees Celsius (36°F) in the Upper Black Forest – the risk of black ice will persist in valleys and depressions. Stormy gusts are expected throughout the region, with the potential for hurricane-force winds in mountainous areas.

Friday’s Outlook: Gray, wet, and Snowy in the Mountains

Friday is forecast to remain gray and wet, with continued showers. These showers will increasingly fall as snow in higher mountain areas. Maximum temperatures are expected to range from 3 to 9 degrees Celsius (37-48°F), with the warmest temperatures in the southern Upper Rhine. The strong winds will continue, posing a hazard in the Black Forest and Swabian Alb, with hurricane-like gusts again possible on the Feldberg.

Weekend Concerns: Snowdrifts and Hazardous Travel

Heavy squalls and snowdrifts are anticipated in the higher mountains on Saturday night. Rain, sleet, or snow is expected in the mountains throughout the day, with significant snowfall expected in the Black Forest and Ostalb regions.Temperatures will drop, reaching a maximum of -1 degree Celsius (30°F) in the mountains and 4 degrees Celsius (39°F) in the lowlands. Strong winds will continue to be a factor, particularly at higher elevations, increasing the risk of heavy squalls and snowdrifts.
