Streamlined Approval Process to Accelerate Social Housing Delivery
A new,simplified approval process for social housing projects is now in effect,representing a key component of the Government’s broader housing plan. The initiative aims to considerably reduce delivery times by replacing the previous four-stage approval system with a single, streamlined process for projects valued under €200 million. This change impacts local authorities and approved housing bodies,removing a layer of bureaucracy previously required by the Department of Housing.
Minister for Housing, James browne, emphasized the government’s commitment to accelerating the delivery of social homes. “I am steadfast to use every opportunity available to accelerate the delivery of social homes. That means reducing bureaucracy, cutting red tape and putting in place systems that allow new social homes to be delivered faster and more efficiently,” he stated.
Alongside the revised approval process, the Government is also implementing standardized designs and specifications for social housing. This move departs from the previous system where local authorities independently designed bespoke projects, and is intended to further expedite delivery and manage costs effectively.
While the Government has faced criticism regarding its progress towards social housing targets, this latest measure demonstrates a renewed effort to achieve its goal of delivering 72,000 social homes by 2030. The changes are expected to foster a more efficient and responsive system for the progress of much-needed social housing across the country.
