Bitcoin experienced a significant price surge on Tuesday, breaking through resistance levels and approaching $96,000, as investors weigh regulatory developments in the U.S., macroeconomic trends, and geopolitical uncertainty. The rally is accompanied by increased trading volume, signaling renewed investor participation.

Regulatory Landscape: Senate Delays and Committee Markups

Progress on U.S. crypto market structure legislation is unfolding, albeit with delays. The Senate Banking Committee markup is still scheduled for january 15. Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman John Boozman announced that legislative text will be released by the close of business on Wednesday, January 21, with a committee markup scheduled for Tuesday, January 27, at 3 p.m.

Boozman said the schedule aims too provide openness and regulatory clarity while supporting consumer protection and U.S. innovation.

The delays suggest potential challenges in securing sufficient votes for the bill, stemming from disagreements regarding stablecoin regulation, oversight of decentralized finance (DeFi), and the division of authority between the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

While the House of Representatives passed it’s version of the bill in mid-2024,further progress hinges on approval from both Senate committees.

bitcoin Market Performance

Despite the regulatory uncertainty, Bitcoin trading activity is robust. 24-hour trading volume has climbed to approximately $55 billion, indicating increased participation as the price rises. Bitcoin’s total market capitalization has reached roughly $1.92 trillion, solidifying its position as the dominant digital asset. the circulating supply currently stands at just under 19.98 million BTC, nearing the protocol’s fixed cap of 21 million coins.

Strategy (MSTR) Stock Soars

Shares of MicroStrategy (MSTR) experienced a significant increase today, closing at $172.99 USD with a 6.63% gain and extending gains in after-hours trading to $177.00. This reflects investor confidence in the company’s strategy of accumulating Bitcoin.

On January 12, MicroStrategy announced the purchase of an additional 13,627 Bitcoin for $1.25 billion, bringing its total holdings to 687,410 BTC. These purchases were made between january 5 and January 11 and funded through an at-the-market offering program involving sales of Class A common stock (MSTR) and 10.00% Series A perpetual preferred stock (STRC).

Bitcoin Price Outlook

Tuesday’s surge represents a breakthrough after several unsuccessful attempts to surpass resistance near the $94,000 level in recent months. For much of the past month, the price fluctuated between approximately $85,000 and $94,000, leading analysts to suggest that a decisive move upward was needed to confirm bullish momentum. That move now appears to be underway.

If Bitcoin sustains its price above $96,000, the next significant resistance levels are anticipated between $98,000 and $104,000, which previously limited price increases. Conversely, a failure to maintain current levels could lead to a retracement towards former resistance, now potential support.

The breakout coincides with investors considering inflation trends, interest rate expectations, and escalating political uncertainty surrounding U.S. monetary policy.

Political Headwinds: DOJ Investigation into Jerome Powell

Adding to the macroeconomic complexity, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has initiated a criminal investigation into Federal reserve Chair Jerome Powell. This investigation intensifies a long-standing dispute between the White house and the U.S.central bank.

According to Powell, the DOJ served the Federal Reserve with grand jury subpoenas and threatened a criminal indictment related to his June 2025 testimony concerning a $2.5 billion renovation of Fed office buildings.

In recent months, Bitcoin’s price has increasingly responded to macro narratives, with many viewing it as a potential hedge against policy instability and long-term currency devaluation.

As of publication, the Bitcoin price is near $96,000.
