Berlin Police Arrest Two Suspects in Handball Trophy Theft,Uncover Extensive Evidence
Berlin,Germany – January 16,2026 – Following the theft of a championship trophy from a Berlin handball Bundesliga club in November 2025,authorities have announced the arrest of two suspects,a 41-year-old man currently in custody and a 62-year-old man who has sence been released pending further examination. The arrests, made on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, are the result of a joint investigation by the Berlin Police and the Berlin Public Prosecutor’s Office.
intensive investigations led by the burglary commissioner of Police Department 5 (City) culminated in a series of searches conducted across Berlin districts – including Marzahn-Hellersdorf, Lichtenberg, and Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg – as well as in Brandenburg. Additional police measures are currently underway in Mecklenburg-western Pomerania, linked to the two suspects.
The searches yielded a significant amount of evidence and assets, including gold valued at a low six-figure euro amount, 15,000 euros in cash, and a melted-down sterling silver bar. Investigators also discovered a smelting furnace and a substantial volume of additional evidence, described as filling a truckload.
Authorities believe the seized items and ongoing evaluation of the evidence suggest connections to multiple other burglaries. While definitive links are still being established thru continued investigation, the scope of the recovered assets indicates a potentially widespread criminal operation.
The 41-year-old suspect was brought before a judge, who issued an arrest warrant, and has been transferred to the Moabit correctional facility. The 62-year-old was briefly taken into police custody but has as been released as the investigation progresses.
