Motorist Flees Police, Evades Capture After Highway Chase Near Groningen
Groningen, Netherlands – January 24, 2026 – A driver attempted to evade police on the A7 highway between Groningen and the German border last night, leading to a chase and ultimately escaping on foot near Midwolde. The incident occurred around 7:45 p.m. when officers signaled the vehicle to stop, though the reason for the initial traffic stop remains undisclosed.
Instead of complying, the driver initiated a pursuit, at one point driving into oncoming traffic.The vehicle eventually left the roadway and ended up in a ditch on the parallel carriageway close to Midwolde. Despite the crash, the driver managed to abandon the car and flee the scene on foot.
A comprehensive search involving ground units and a police helicopter was immediately launched. Authorities alerted local residents thru the Burgernet notification system, requesting vigilance for a man described as being between 20 and 30 years old, with a tanned complexion, wearing dark, wet clothing and carrying a brown bag.
As of this morning, the suspect remains at large. Police investigations are ongoing, and further details will be released as they become available.Authorities have not yet commented on potential charges pending the apprehension of the individual.
