Gardaí Issue Warnings Over Burglary Trends and whatsapp Scam

January 24, 2024 – Gardaí (Irish police) are advising the public to be vigilant following a recent increase in burglaries and are warning about a new scam targeting citizens via WhatsApp.

Gardaí are noting a trend of burglaries occurring during daylight hours, often while homes are unoccupied. They are urging homeowners to ensure their properties are secure, even when they are at home.Recommendations include ensuring all doors and windows are locked,and considering the installation of an alarm system. Gardaí also emphasize the importance of recording serial numbers of valuable possessions, as this can be very helpful in the event of a theft.

“We’re asking people to be aware of their surroundings and to report anything unusual to us instantly,” a local crime prevention officer stated. “This includes unfamiliar vehicles or individuals acting suspiciously in their area.”

New WhatsApp Scam Alert

Gardaí are also warning the public about a new and concerning WhatsApp scam. Fraudsters are impersonating members of An Garda Síochána (the Irish police force) by using WhatsApp calls and displaying the official Garda crest as their profile picture.

The aim of the scam is to deceive individuals into divulging sensitive personal or banking information. Gardaí have firmly stated that they will never contact members of the public via WhatsApp to request such information.

“We are reminding the public that we will never contact anyone via WhatsApp to request bank details or personal information,” the crime prevention officer emphasized. “We urge anyone who receives such a call not to engage with the caller and to report the incident to their local Gardaí immediately.”
