“How We Want” Film Challenges Abortion Discourse and Champions Reproductive Freedom

The documentary “How We Want” offers a powerful and nuanced outlook on abortion, moving beyond the customary pro-choice versus anti-choice debate to explore the complexities of reproductive freedom and the societal structures that impact individual decision-making. Through the intimate stories of 50 individuals in Germany who have undergone abortion procedures, the film presents a compelling counter-narrative to the pervasive social stigma surrounding this often-sensitive topic.

Germany’s legal landscape surrounding abortion remains restrictive, classifying the procedure as a criminal offence despite legal protections for unborn life. Access to abortion care is further complicated by a shortage of female physicians and the growing influence of conservative, faith-based organizations. “How We Want” directly confronts these challenges, prompting viewers to question what constitutes a truly “free” decision within a system that can be inherently oppressive.

The film distinguishes itself through its innovative narrative approach. Rather than relying on a traditional, authoritative voiceover, “How We want” employs a chorus of women, trans, and non-binary individuals as narrators. This collective voice embodies a feminist cinematic perspective, amplifying the experiences and perspectives of those directly affected by abortion laws and societal pressures.

Released against the backdrop of a global erosion of reproductive rights – coinciding with the 150th anniversary of Paragraph 218, the German law criminalizing abortion in 2021 – “How We Want” serves as a timely and vital contribution to the international fight for bodily autonomy and self-determination. The film doesn’t simply advocate for abortion access; it delves into the broader societal issues of cisheteronormativity, racism, capitalism, and ableism, examining how these structures limit individual agency and shape reproductive choices.

“How we Want” is more than a documentary; it’s a call to action, urging audiences to critically examine the forces that influence reproductive freedom and to advocate for a more just and equitable society where all individuals have the power to make informed decisions about their own bodies and futures.
