Juozas Žala, a prominent figure in Lithuanian handball, passed away recently, leaving behind a significant legacy as a player, coach, and administrator. His contributions to the sport,particularly wiht vilnius’ Eglė club,have been widely recognized by the Lithuanian Handball Federation.
Early Career and Playing days
Born on November 2, 1947, in Krekenava, Panevėžys County, Žala began his handball journey in his hometown in 1961. He later moved to Kaunas, where he played for the Pilėnų team, earning all three medals of the Lithuanian Championship: gold in 1970, silver in 1967, and bronze in 1968.
Coaching and Administrative Roles
After retiring as a player, Žala dedicated several decades to coaching and handball administration. He made a lasting impact on Lithuanian handball history thru his work with Vilnius’ Eglė club from 1991 to 2016. He served as the club’s coach, manager, and administrator during this period.
Success with Eglė
under Žala’s leadership, Eglė achieved remarkable success, winning the Lithuanian championship 18 times and the Lithuanian Cup 17 times. Lithuanian Handball federation

Žala also contributed to the national level, coaching the Lithuanian women’s handball team from 2004 to 2006.
