US-Canada Trade Tensions Escalate as Trump Threatens Aircraft Tariffs
Amidst ongoing disputes and as teh North american trade agreement (T-MEC) faces review, former U.S. President Donald Trump has ignited a new trade conflict with Canada.Through a post on his Truth Social network,trump announced the decertification of all aircraft manufactured in Canada,specifically targeting Bombardier’s global Express line,until american aircraft manufacturer Gulfstream receives full certification in Canada.
This action follows Canada’s refusal to certify Gulfstream’s 500, 600, 700, and 800 series jet aircraft, a situation Trump characterizes as an “illegal, improper and constant measure.” He further escalated the situation by threatening to impose a 50% tariff on all Canadian aircraft imported into the United States should the issue remain unresolved.
The declaration promptly impacted Bombardier’s stock value, with shares falling by 5% on January 30th. This move arrives shortly after comments made by canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney,who suggested a shift away from the U.S.-led global rules-based order.
Analysts speculate that Trump’s decision may be a response to Carney’s statements, rather than solely stemming from the aircraft certification dispute. The escalating tensions raise concerns about the future of US-Canada trade relations as the T-MEC review approaches.
