Jitish Kallat’s ‘Wind Study’: Where Art Meets Atmospheric Data
For years, acclaimed contemporary artist jitish Kallat has engaged in a unique artistic practice within his Mumbai studio. His process begins with the Hilbert Curve, a complex fractal line that intricately fills every available space. however, for Kallat, the drawing itself is merely the starting point.
He extends his work beyond the studio walls, igniting the drawn line outdoors. This invites the natural world to participate, as the flames, guided by the ever-changing local winds, create a “scorched transcript”-a tangible record of the interaction between wind and fire.
Now, Kallat is sharing this captivating exploration with the world through Wind Study, a new interactive drawing experience developed in collaboration with Google arts & Culture. As part of Google’s ongoing commitment to supporting artistic innovation through technology, Wind Study reimagines Kallat’s physical process in a dynamic virtual habitat.
Wind Study allows users to draw using real-time atmospheric data, generating evolving digital representations of wind patterns. This innovative project offers a compelling intersection of art, science, and technology, inviting audiences to engage with the invisible forces that shape our world.
