The Warriors will have tried everything until the end to offer themselves one last splash on the transfer market. For several days, the Californian franchise increased discussions with the Bucks around Giannis Antetokounmpo. But despite an offer considered extremely aggressive, no agreement ultimately saw the light of day.

The ambitions of the Warriors were however clear. Aware that the shooting window around Stephen Curry is gradually closing, the managers wanted to strike a big blow in order to give their superstar a real chance of a title. Giannis Antetokounmpo represented the ideal target: a player capable of instantly transforming a team into a Larry O’Brien Trophy contender. Golden State has therefore decided to put a colossal package on the table.

According to several reports from the United States, the Warriors’ final offer was essentially based on a mountain of draft picks. The franchise would have offered no less than four unprotected first rounds in order to convince Milwaukee. An extremely rare proposition in the modern NBA, especially for an organization accustomed to building through internal development. But even that wasn’t enough to falter the Bucks.

A strategic pivot towards Porzingis

Brian Windhorst, renowned ESPN journalist, provided the details of this latest attempt: “The Warriors made what they considered a very strong offer that included four unprotected first rounders, picks that would have passed on after Stephen Curry retired, and the Bucks simply didn’t show much interest. The discussions continued, then at some point last night the Warriors decided to move on and do a side deal for Kristaps Porzingis. » A statement that perfectly sums up the turn of events.

Faced with Milwaukee’s repeated refusal, Golden State therefore chose not to sit idly by. Rather than focusing on an issue that had become hopeless, the Warriors quickly reoriented their strategy. This is how Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield were sent to Atlanta to recover Kristaps Porzingis, an interior capable of providing size, outside shooting and protection of the circle.

This movement proves that the franchise did not want to leave the deadline without major reinforcement. Porzingis obviously doesn’t have the same impact as Antetokounmpo, but he represents a more realistic option to support Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. The Warriors hope that the Latvian, if he manages to stay healthy, can stabilize a sometimes fragile interior sector.

For his part, Giannis Antetokounmpo can therefore take a breather. Long cited in rumors, the Greek finally finished the season in the Bucks jersey. Speculation will undoubtedly resume this summer, but for now, Milwaukee keeps a firm grip on its destiny. No team managed to bring the organization down before the deadline.
