Musk’s SpaceX valuation Soars, Tesla Merger Looms
SpaceX recently completed a secondary share sale, increasing its valuation to $180 billion [Reuters]. This surge in valuation, fueled by its Starship program and satellite internet service Starlink, has reignited speculation about a potential merger with Tesla. The company’s expansion into artificial intelligence further solidifies its position as a tech behemoth, prompting analysts to consider the possibility of a combined entity dominating the AI ecosystem.
Ross Gerber,an investor in both X (formerly Twitter) and spacex, expressed enthusiasm about the valuation increase, noting that his initial investment in X has effectively been converted into SpaceX shares. However, he cautioned that existing SpaceX shareholders might view the situation differently.
“For me as a Twitter shareholder, I coudl not be happier. I pretty much figured I had lost my money but that has now been parlayed into owning SpaceX shares. It’s awesome for me but if I was a SpaceX shareholder I would be pissed.”
What Next? A Tesla-SpaceX merger?
Elon musk currently holds approximately 44% of SpaceX and 17% of Tesla, where he serves as CEO [Forbes]. Analysts are increasingly considering a potential merger between the two companies.
Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives believes there is a “growing chance” of creating a single investment vehicle for Musk’s ventures. “Musk wants to own and control more of the AI ecosystem and step by step the holy grail could be combining SpaceX and Tesla,” he says [CNBC].
Gerber believes the timing is opportune, with both companies currently valued at around $1.25 trillion combined. “This is the time to create a multitrillion-dollar company. I know Elon. It’s going to happen,” he says.
