There has been a shooting incident at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in the north-eastern part of British Columbia in Canada, reports Associated Press.
According to local police, ten people are said to be dead in total, including the alleged perpetrator, according to the channel CBC.
In addition, several are injured, reports the news agency AP.
Six of those killed were found at the school, which is located in the small town of Tumbler Ridge. Another died on the way to hospital.
A further two were found murdered in a home in the area, which is linked to the incident at the school. It is unclear how many of those killed are adults and children.
The alleged perpetrator, who according to the police is a woman, was found dead at the school after taking her own life, police superintendent Ken Floyd stated during a press conference just after 04:00 Norwegian time.
The CBC reports that another 25 people are being examined by health professionals. The condition is life-threatening or serious for two people who have been flown to hospital, according to the channel.
The police say that they do not believe that there are more perpetrators involved in the incident.
– Stay inside
The residents of the town of Tumbler Ridge, which has around 2,400 inhabitants, were asked to stay indoors on Monday night.
Both the upper secondary school and the primary school in the city have been placed in “lockdown”, the school district says.
Larry Neufeld, who represents the area in the provincial assembly, says that large resources have been sent to the site.
– We understand that some people are out looking for loved ones, but please go back to your homes and stay inside, he told the press according to AP.
Tumbler Ridge Secondary School has 175 students from grades 7 to 12, according to the provincial government’s website.
The police refer to the situation as an “active shooter” incident and are still working on the scene.
