The most emotional and glorious event of next autumn at the “Sea Gate” theater house will be the visit of the Vanemuine Theater of Estonia with the ballet performance “Love story of a lifetime. Rain in December”, inspired by the life and music of Frederic Chopin.
The ballet “Lifetime Love Story. Rain in December” portrays the love story between Frédéric Chopin and Georges Sanda, a prominent writer who needed to use a male pseudonym to succeed in the literary environment of 19th century France. The performance features Chopin’s piano music, which is performed by a pianist during the performance, just like in a concert.
“Love Story of a Lifetime. Rain in December” is not a performance with grand scenery, but a delicate, chamber-style work, in which the aesthetics of classical dance are refreshed by the dynamics of modern dance. The story played out in the show is about specific historical figures, so it is important that the dancers managed to give the characters human warmth, and not just perform the steps technically. The movements are fluid, emotionally charged and very aesthetic. On the other hand, the scenography and lights of the show create a Nordic, slightly melancholic, but at the same time very intimate atmosphere.
The author, director, choreographer and scenographer of the show’s idea is Kristina Paulina, a former dancer of the Hamburg Ballet. The premiere of the new choreographer’s ballet “Rain in December” took place in 2022 at the “Landestheater” in Salzburg. In the Vanemuine Theater production, the second act has been developed anew, in which special attention is paid to Chopin’s inner world. The new performance had its premiere in Estonia two years later, marking the 85th anniversary of the Vanemuines Theater.
“To me, all of Chopin’s compositions seem personal, fragile and very delicate. Listening to his music, you can truly feel the presence of his soul – he devoted his whole life to art. It is through this art that he will remain with us forever. The main focus of the performance is the most important events in the life of Frédéric Chopin and his relationship and love for the French writer Georges Sand,” reveals Kristina Paulina.
