Women’s Super-G – results:
Italian skier Federica Brignone won the Olympic Games 2026 the first Olympic gold in his career.
The 35-year-old Italian won Thursday’s super-G race with a lead of 41 hundredths of a second ahead of France’s Romane Miradoli, while Cornelia Hütterová from Austria won the bronze (+0.52).
Slovak representative Rebeka Jančová took 21st place with a deficit of 5.10 seconds to the winner.
Until now, Brignone was waiting for the most valuable metal from under the five rings. Four years ago, she won silver and bronze in Beijing, in 2018 she finished in Pyeongchang on the silver stage in the giant slalom.
The two-time winner of the big crystal globe for her World Cup triumph took the gold after a turbulent period. Brignone’s start on the Olympic slope was uncertain until recently.
She did not return to the competitive carousel until January 20 in Kronplatz. In the Italian resort, she completed her first race after a nine-month break caused by a complicated leg fracture, which she suffered after falling at the domestic championship in April.
The Super-G at Tofana tested the technical skills of the female racers. The section in the upper part of the track caused significant problems for them, where several aspirants for the podium were burnt.
The mentioned section required the right balance of speed and ideal track. A frequent phenomenon was precisely a “trip” off the line, a loss of speed or, on the contrary, a too fast run, after which the female racers did not enter the next gate.
Several favorites have fallen out
The Germans Kira Weidleová-Winkelmannová and Emma Aicherová did not finish from the elite ten, the Austrian Mirjam Puchnerová also did not reach the finish line with four, and the same fate befell the excited home contender for a medal, Sofia Goggiová.
It was she who bet on the maximum risk, picked up a decent speed, but could not handle the uneven terrain. She had to correct her position on the skis several times and was only centimeters away from falling. The technical passage was the best for Brignone, who went clean in it and gained hundredths for the better than her rivals.
Hütter had a similar story to Brignone, whose career was hampered by frequent injuries. On Sunday, she took 4th place in the downhill and was 27 hundredths of a second away from bronze.
However, she made up for it in the super-G and took the first Olympic medal in her career. Her silver medal was won by Miradoliová, a specialist in this discipline, who is in the current 4th place in the SP in the super-G rating. The 31-year-old French woman succeeded in her third participation under five circles.
Jančová achieved career best finish
Jančová started at her second Olympics with starting number 40. She improved her ranking from Beijing, in which she finished 39th in the super-G.
Twenty-two-year-old Jančová achieved the best ranking in her career at Tofan, as she finished the highest in the World Cup at 35th position.
“I think I had some pretty good stretches there. The Super-G was very broken, it came very fast and there were a lot of hidden gates behind the waves that you couldn’t see.
You needed to have a perfect direction because the distance between the gates was very short and you had to react quickly. When I slightly missed the direction, I automatically fought with the line. Overall, it was good, I got into it fully,” said Jančová for STVR Šport.
Sarah Schleperová, an American representing Mexico, took care of the historic moment. The skier, who will celebrate her 47th birthday in a week, became the first representative of alpine skiing with seven participations in the Games.
She represented the USA in four Olympics from 1998 to 2010 and Mexico in 2018, 2022 and 2026. In Thursday’s super-G, she finished in the last classified 26th place with a loss of 7.96 seconds.
