Nutella and Doping: Italian Biathlete Cleared for Olympics

Italian biathlete Rebecca Passler has been cleared to compete at the 2026 Winter Olympics after a positive doping test was linked to contamination from Nutella hazelnut spread. The case, which initially led to a provisional suspension, was overturned by Italy’s anti-doping body, Nado Italia, on February 13th, allowing Passler to rejoin her team and potentially compete in the women’s relay on Wednesday.

The Positive Test and Passler’s Explanation

Passler tested positive for letrozole, a banned substance, on January 26th. She attributed the positive result to accidental contamination, explaining that she had been living with her mother, who was undergoing breast cancer treatment involving letrozole. According to Passler’s appeal, the contamination likely occurred through a shared spoon used to eat Nutella.

Appeal Successful and Reinstatement

The National Court of Appeal of Nado Italia upheld Passler’s appeal, recognizing the possibility of contamination as a credible explanation. The Guardian reported that Passler rejoined the Italian team on February 15th and is eligible to compete immediately.

Potential Participation in Women’s Relay

Although Passler missed earlier competitions due to the suspension, she is now eligible for the women’s relay scheduled for Wednesday. Italy team captain Klaus Hoellrigl indicated he was considering including her in the foursome for the event. Reuters confirmed this possibility.

Ongoing Investigation

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has noted that the decision to clear Passler is provisional. A tribunal will be established by Nado Italia to conduct a full hearing of the case at a later date. Yahoo Sports detailed this ongoing process.

Passler’s Statement

“They have been very difficult days,” Passler said in a statement released by FISI. “I have always believed in my fine faith. I thank all those who helped me, from the lawyers who followed my situation, to the Italian Winter Sports Federation, to my family and friends.”
