Ben Oliver Secures Podium Finish at Vuelta a Andalucía, Continuing Impressive Form

Novel Zealand cyclist Ben Oliver demonstrated his growing prowess on the European road racing scene, securing a third-place finish on Stage 1 of the Vuelta a Andalucía Ruta Ciclista Del Sol on February 18, 2026. The result marks Oliver’s first professional podium in Europe with his new team, Modern Adventure Pro Cycling.

A Strong Start to the Season

The 29-year-old Oliver, who transitioned to dedicated road racing after a decade of international mountain biking, had already signaled his form with a third-place finish in the time trial at the New Zealand National Championships. He followed that up with a sixth-place finish in the road race, placing first among the riders from the main peloton.

Stage 1 Recap: Vuelta a Andalucía

Stage 1 of the Vuelta a Andalucía, a 150km race to Pizarra, featured numerous attacks and climbs in the first half. A breakaway group initially established a lead, but was eventually reeled in by the peloton with 36km remaining. Oliver navigated the hilly terrain effectively, relying on his teammates to position him for the final sprint.

In a chaotic sprint finish, Oliver showcased his quick reflexes, successfully avoiding a crash caused by a squeeze onto a roundabout within the final kilometer. He then positioned himself on the wheel of Christophe Laporte (Visma-Lease a Bike) and launched a strong sprint of his own. While Laporte took the stage win and Bastien Tronchon (Groupama-FDJ United) finished second, Oliver secured a commendable third place.

Oliver’s Reaction and Team Success

“It was a wild day of racing with the boys, the pace never let up the whole day,” Oliver said in a team statement. “A lot of us got over the first 25k climb then Lucas got in the break and the rest of us managed to stick together.” He added, “I held on over some pretty hilly terrain in the middle of the stage. The three boys I had left with me did a great job to navigate me to the finish line and get me close enough to keep me in the mix. In the last 2k I surfed the wheels as much as I could and gave everything to the line.”

This podium finish is the second 2.Pro level result for Modern Adventure Pro Cycling, following Bryan Munton’s second-place stage finish at the AlUla Tour. Oliver expressed his excitement, stating, “First pro race in Europe and first podium – absolutely wrapped! Team vibes are good, now four more days to go.”

Looking Ahead

Ben Oliver’s strong performance at the Vuelta a Andalucía signals a promising start to his first year as a dedicated road professional. He will continue to compete with Modern Adventure Pro Cycling, with four more stages remaining in the Vuelta a Andalucía.
