Google Drive to Automatically Back Up Android Downloads

Google is rolling out a new feature as part of its February system services update for Android that automatically backs up files downloaded to Android devices. This ensures downloaded files are preserved and accessible across multiple Android devices linked to the same Google account.

How the New Backup Feature Works

The new feature, described by Google as “local file backups,” will function similarly to the Google Drive desktop application for macOS and Windows. Once activated, it will automatically back up all files from the Downloads folder to Google Drive cloud storage.

Where to Find Backup Settings

Existing backup options on Android are categorized as “Photos and videos” and “Other data from the device.” The new backups of downloaded files will be added under “Other data from the device.” Currently, this category includes SMS and MMS messages, contacts, call history, device settings, applications and their data, and even SIM card (eSIM) information.

On devices with a pure Android experience, the backup function can be found in Settings – System – Backup. Samsung phone users can locate Google backups in Settings – Accounts and backups – Data backup (Google Drive). The location may vary on devices from other manufacturers, but it can generally be found within the phone’s settings.

Accessing Backups

Once the February update is installed, users will be able to access their downloaded files on all Android devices associated with their Google account. The specific method Google will utilize to synchronize files across devices – whether through individual folders per device or a single shared folder – remains to be seen.
