Antonelli Apologizes to Ferrari After Leclerc Crash, Mercedes and Ferrari Lead Testing

Recent Formula 1 testing sessions have highlighted Mercedes and Ferrari as frontrunners for the upcoming season, even as a collision between Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc has prompted an apology from the young Italian driver.

Leclerc and Antonelli Collision

During the Dutch Grand Prix on August 31, 2025, Kimi Antonelli collided with Charles Leclerc, resulting in Leclerc’s retirement from the race. Antonelli was deemed responsible for the incident and received a 10-second time penalty, as well as an additional five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane Formula 1. Testing Performance Indicates Mercedes and Ferrari Advantage

Despite the on-track incident, testing has indicated a strong performance from both Mercedes, and Ferrari. Andrea Stella, team principal of McLaren, stated that Ferrari and Mercedes “look like the teams to beat” Formula 1. This assessment is based on race simulation runs, which provide a clearer picture of performance than single-lap times.

Charles Leclerc set the fastest race simulation time during testing, slightly ahead of Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri. Kimi Antonelli also demonstrated impressive pace in race simulations during the first week of testing, setting a comfortably faster time than Piastri Formula 1. George Russell, Antonelli’s teammate, also showed strong performance in warmer conditions.

Other Considerations

McLaren was not utilizing the latest specification of the Mercedes power-unit during testing, suggesting a potential performance increase when they switch to the updated spec in Australia. Red Bull’s new engine is also reported to have a strong energy deployment, a crucial factor in the upcoming season. Mercedes’ primary concern remains reliability, with Antonelli experiencing more issues than Russell, although Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar also faced some running difficulties Formula 1.
