Major Fire in Blijham Barns Under Control, Residents Advised to Close Windows
Blijham, Netherlands – February 22, 2026 – A large fire that broke out in two barns on the Hoofdweg in Blijham is now under control, according to the latest updates from local authorities. The fire, which began earlier today, prompted a significant response from fire services, including a large water transport from Veendam to ensure an adequate water supply for firefighting efforts.
Fire Response and Containment
The fire brigade scaled up its response to a major incident, deploying additional equipment to combat the spreading flames. Despite their efforts, the barns were unable to be saved. Firefighters focused on preventing the fire from spreading to nearby buildings, successfully containing it to the original structures.
“We do suffer from the unfavorable wind. This requires extra attention to the environment,” a fire brigade spokesperson stated. Residents in the surrounding area were advised to close windows and doors and switch off ventilation systems to avoid smoke inhalation.
Ongoing Operations and Smoke Nuisance
Whereas the fire is under control, firefighters are continuing to extinguish remaining hotspots. Authorities warn that this ongoing process may still cause smoke nuisance in the area.
