A Hit From London to Broadway
Operation Mincemeat, a musical comedy based on the true story of a British deception operation during World War II, began its journey at the New Diorama Theatre in London in 2019 with a small budget. The production quickly gained popularity, leading to sold-out engagements at the Southwark Playhouse and Riverside Studios.
In 2023, the show premiered in the West End at the Fortune Theatre, where it received critical acclaim, winning the Olivier and WhatsOnStage Awards for Best New Musical and garnering 88 five-star reviews. It then transferred to Broadway, where it continued its success, winning a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for Jak Malone’s performance as Hester Leggatt.
The Story and the Team
Operation Mincemeat tells the story of a daring plan to disguise the Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943. The musical is written by Cumming, Hodgson, and Roberts, along with Felix Hagan, collectively known as the UK theater troupe SpitLip.
The cast features David Cumming as Charles Cholmondeley, Claire-Marie Hall as Jean Leslie, Natasha Hodgson as Ewen Montagu, Jak Malone as Hester Leggatt, and Zoë Roberts as Johnny Bevan, and Others. Malone’s rendition of the ballad “Dear Bill” has been a standout performance.
The creative team includes Robert Hastie (director), Jenny Arnold (choreographer), Ben Stones (scenic and costume design), Mark Henderson (lighting), Mike Walker (sound), Steve Sidwell (orchestrations and vocal arrangements), and Joe Bunker (musical director).
As described by the production, Operation Mincemeat is a “swift-paced, hilarious and unbelievable true story” that blends elements of Singin’ in the Rain, Strangers on a Train, and the comedic styles of Noel Coward and Noel Fielding.
