Android Earthquake Alerts Now Available on Wear OS Without Smartphone Pairing

Google has expanded the functionality of its Android Earthquake Alerts System, now enabling alerts to be delivered directly to Wear OS smartwatches even when they are not paired with a smartphone. This enhancement builds upon the initial introduction of earthquake alerts to Android in 2020 and the expansion to all 50 U.S. States in late 2024. The ability to receive alerts independently on Wear OS devices was initially available in June 2025, but previously required a connected phone.

How the System Works

The Android Earthquake Alerts System leverages the sensors present in billions of Android devices – specifically, accelerometers – to detect seismic activity. When a phone detects shaking, it sends anonymized data, including its approximate location, to Google’s earthquake detection servers. By analyzing data from numerous devices, Google can identify and confirm earthquake events and issue alerts.

The system provides two types of alerts:

  • Be Aware Alert: Issued for light to moderate shaking (magnitude 4.5 or higher), informing users of nearby earthquake activity.
  • Accept Action Alert: Delivered for strong shaking (magnitude 4.5 or higher with moderate or greater intensity), bypassing “Do Not Disturb” mode and playing a loud sound to prompt immediate safety measures.

Wear OS Integration

The latest update to Google Play Services (version 26.07) enables Wear OS devices to receive these alerts without needing a connection to a smartphone. Google has not yet released detailed support documentation on how to configure this feature, but it is included in the latest Google Play Services build.

Global Reach of Android Earthquake Alerts

Google’s Earthquake Alerts System is currently available in over 98 countries [Google Crisis Response]. The system utilizes a crowdsourced approach to earthquake detection globally, supplementing data from traditional seismic networks in regions like California, Washington and Oregon, where it partners with the ShakeAlert® team [Google Crisis Response].
