HKGX and AGTech Partner to Develop Gold Trading Platform
Hong Kong Gold Exchange (HKGX) and AGTech Holdings Limited, a member of the Alibaba Group, have partnered to develop a comprehensive, one-stop trading services platform for precious metals. The collaboration aims to strengthen Hong Kong’s position as a leading international gold trading hub, bridging Eastern and Western markets through enhanced digital infrastructure.
A New Digital Infrastructure for Gold Trading
The partnership, announced during HKGX’s Lunar New Year market opening ceremony, will focus on building an integrated system encompassing spot trading, futures, and over-the-counter (OTC) trading. A core component of this system is a new raw materials blockchain and a modernized clearing and settlement system . This technological upgrade is designed to improve efficiency and digitize exchange member management.
Expanding Access with Digital Gold and Renminbi Integration
The platform will also enable trading in digital gold and facilitate direct business-to-consumer (B2C) transactions, broadening access to precious metals investments for a wider, digitally-savvy audience . A key technical aspect of the project is the implementation of multi-currency processing, with specific support for both onshore and offshore Renminbi (RMB) . Integrating the RMB into risk management and settlement processes aims to provide flexibility for international market participants.
Supporting Hong Kong’s Gold Trading Ambitions
The initiative directly supports the Hong Kong SAR government’s policy, announced by Chief Executive John Lee in the 2024 Policy Address, to develop Hong Kong into a prominent international gold trading center . The government is committed to attracting the storage, clearing, and settlement of spot gold within the city, and fostering the growth of the associated industrial chain, including investment trading, derivatives, warehousing, insurance, trade, and logistics .
AGTech’s Role and Expertise
AGTech will leverage its expertise in digital finance, internationalization support, risk management, and platform governance to contribute to the platform’s development . Gavin Zhao, Chief Product and Technology Officer of AGTech, highlighted the company’s pleasure in collaborating with HKGX .
Haywood Cheung, Chairman of HKGX, stated the partnership will develop an international precious metals trading platform, a clearing and settlement system, and a digital commodity blockchain .
