Paramount President Jeff Shell Faces Scrutiny Over Alleged UFC Deal Disclosure

Paramount president Jeff Shell is under investigation following allegations that he improperly disclosed confidential details regarding the company’s $7.7 billion media rights deal with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) prior to its public announcement in August 2025. The allegations were brought forth by R.J. Cipriani, a professional gambler and former associate of Shell, and are currently being reviewed by both an outside law firm and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Whistleblower Complaint and Investigation

The core of the complaint centers around claims that Shell revealed specific information about the timing, cost, and structure of the UFC deal almost a month before it was officially announced. Following the news of the Paramount pact, TKO Group Holdings, the parent company of UFC, experienced a 10 percent surge in its stock price (The Hollywood Reporter).

R.J. Cipriani and Patricia Glaser’s Role

R.J. Cipriani, the reporting party, is a high-stakes gambler with a history as a federal whistleblower. He was previously in settlement negotiations with Shell over a dispute involving consultation services. Cipriani declined to comment on the matter. Notably, both Cipriani and Shell were previously represented by Patricia Glaser, a prominent Hollywood attorney, though Glaser no longer represents Cipriani (The Hollywood Reporter).

Glaser, in a statement, indicated that a draft complaint she reviewed contained “clear errors of fact and law” and that she would “strongly respond” if it were filed (The Hollywood Reporter).

Connection to a Prior Dispute

The current investigation surfaces at a critical time for Paramount, as the company recently increased its bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, potentially outmaneuvering Netflix in the process. Cipriani had previously pitched Shell on an English-language version of his Roku series, “Serenade of the Stars,” but the discussion reportedly soured, leading to the whistleblower complaint (Page Six).

Shell’s Past and Paramount’s Hiring Practices

Shell’s arrival at Paramount followed his departure from NBCUniversal in 2023 due to allegations of “inappropriate conduct.” David Ellison, the owner of Paramount, has demonstrated a willingness to overlook past allegations of misconduct in hiring decisions, as seen with previous hires John Lasseter and Max Landis (Deadline).

Paramount has engaged the law firm Gibson Dunn to investigate the claims. Nick Hanna, a partner at Gibson Dunn and former U.S. Attorney, is leading the probe (Deadline).
