Charlotte FC Bolsters Defense with Signings of Andrew Johnson and Will Cleary

Andrew Johnson Joins Charlotte FC
Defender Andrew Johnson, 22, has signed a professional contract with Charlotte FC through the 2026 MLS season, with club options for June of 2027, 2027-28, and 2028-29. Johnson was selected in the Second Round of the 2025 MLS SuperDraft, with the 47th overall pick, out of Cornell University. Charlotte FC General Manager Zoran Krneta praised Johnson’s work ethic and potential impact on the squad.
At Cornell, Johnson captained the Big Red’s backline to a top-ten national ranking in 2025, earning All-Northeast Region and unanimous First Team All-Ivy honors. He made 69 appearances over four years, scoring five goals and providing one assist. Prior to his collegiate career, Johnson developed through the Philadelphia Union Academy and FC Delco Academy, an MLS NEXT side. He also has international experience, having earned six caps with St. Vincent & the Grenadines, including appearances in Gold Cup and World Cup qualification matches. His international debut came in a friendly against Grenada on March 6, 2025.
Will Cleary Signs Professional Contract
Charlotte FC also announced the signing of defender Will Cleary to a professional contract for the 2026 campaign. Cleary’s contract, similar to Johnson’s, includes club options through 2029. Krneta highlighted Cleary’s impressive preseason performances and potential to contribute to the team’s success.
Cleary, 23, was drafted in the First Round of the 2026 MLS SuperDraft, with the 22nd overall pick, from Stanford University. He served as Stanford’s senior captain in 2025, leading the Cardinal to its fourth consecutive appearance in the Third Round of the NCAA tournament. He made 79 career appearances for Stanford, tallying six goals and nine assists. Cleary was also recognized for his academic achievements, earning First Team Academic All-American honors in 2025.
