Olympia School District Faces Budget Cuts and Potential School Closures
The Olympia School District is grappling with significant budget challenges, raising concerns about potential school closures and staff reductions. Parents and educators are voicing their worries as the district seeks to address a growing financial shortfall.
Budget Deficit and Proposed Cuts
As of February 26, 2026, the Olympia School District is considering a plan to cut $4.1 million from its budget as reported by The Olympian. This plan has sparked fears that schools may be closed and staff positions eliminated.
These cuts come after the district faced a potential $11.5 million deficit for the 2023-24 school year according to Northwest Public Broadcasting. The shortfall prompted discussions about a reduction in force (RIF), which could lead to layoffs, particularly impacting staff with less seniority.
Concerns from Parents and Educators
Miriam Hathaway, a parent in the Olympia School District, expressed her concerns during a February 26th board meeting, stating that the superintendent’s proposed cuts could lead to school closures as reported by The Olympian.
Jodi Boe, president of the Olympia Education Association, highlighted the “tremendous worry” among educators regarding potential staff layoffs as reported by Northwest Public Broadcasting. The association is as well exploring alternatives to layoffs, such as relying on attrition through retirements and resignations, which typically account for around 60 teacher vacancies annually.
Reduction in Force (RIF) Process
The school board is scheduled to vote on whether to enact a RIF process, which would involve considering the elimination of staff positions based on seniority. If approved, notices to affected staff would be required by May 15th according to Northwest Public Broadcasting.
While RIFs don’t always result in layoffs, the uncertainty and stress caused by potential job losses are significant concerns for educators.
