Budget Deficit and Proposed Cuts

These cuts come after the district faced a potential $11.5 million deficit for the 2023-24 school year according to Northwest Public Broadcasting. The shortfall prompted discussions about a reduction in force (RIF), which could lead to layoffs, particularly impacting staff with less seniority.

Concerns from Parents and Educators

Miriam Hathaway, a parent in the Olympia School District, expressed her concerns during a February 26th board meeting, stating that the superintendent’s proposed cuts could lead to school closures as reported by The Olympian.

Jodi Boe, president of the Olympia Education Association, highlighted the “tremendous worry” among educators regarding potential staff layoffs as reported by Northwest Public Broadcasting. The association is as well exploring alternatives to layoffs, such as relying on attrition through retirements and resignations, which typically account for around 60 teacher vacancies annually.
