Ohio Juvenile Arrested in Credit Card Fraud Scheme at Smokeablez

Bellefontaine, OH – A 17-year-old male was arrested Sunday evening following a credit card fraud incident at Smokeablez, a local smoke shop. The Bellefontaine Police Department responded to a call from the store shortly before 7 p.m., initiating an investigation that is still ongoing.

Details of the Incident

According to the Bellefontaine Police Department, four individuals entered Smokeablez earlier in the day and attempted to make purchases using numerous credit cards displayed on their cell phones. Approximately 20 different cards were attempted, with several being declined. The group successfully completed three transactions totaling $2,223.

The store owner reported that the individuals presented photo identification on their phones, which appeared to correspond with the names on the credit cards. Shortly after the purchases, a woman contacted the store to report unauthorized charges on her credit card, confirming two fraudulent charges totaling $628, with the last four digits matching those used at Smokeablez.

Investigation and Arrest

Surveillance footage and transaction receipts were provided to the police. Later that evening, the same group returned to the store, prompting another call to law enforcement. The store owner briefly secured the doors before allowing the group to leave and then followed them.

Police also responded to a separate report of an individual chasing the group even as brandishing a handgun, which was later determined to be unloaded. Officers located one suspect, identified as Strength Bettah, 17, of Pickerington, inside a Lowe’s store. Bettah initially provided false information before being identified, and arrested. He was transported to the Central Ohio Youth Center.

Ongoing Investigation

The investigation remains active, and authorities have not yet located the remaining suspects. Additional charges may be filed as the investigation progresses.
