‘Bigfoot!’ Musical Brings Joy and Hope to Off-Broadway
A new off-Broadway musical comedy, Bigfoot!, is generating buzz for its unique blend of humor, heart, and a timely message of acceptance. Co-produced by comedian Amber Ruffin, the show opened at New York City Center Stage I on February 11, 2026, and has extended its run through April 26, 2026, due to popular demand.
A Tale of the Misunderstood
Set in the fictional town of Muddirt, a quirky locale described as being “somewhere between a chemical dump site and a nuclear power plant,” Bigfoot! tells the story of a kindhearted, eight-foot-tall creature who simply wants to be part of the community. However, he becomes the target of corrupt politicians and small-town paranoia. The musical explores themes of otherness, belonging, and the challenges faced by those who are different.
The Creative Team and Cast
Bigfoot! features lyrics by Tony and Emmy Award nominee Amber Ruffin, with a book by Ruffin and Kevin Sciretta (known for their work on MST3K). The music is composed by David Schmoll (The Second City), and the show is directed and choreographed by Danny Mefford (Spelling Bee, Fun Home).
Grey Henson stars as Bigfoot, bringing a lovable and nuanced performance to the role. Henson’s previous Broadway credits include Elf The Musical, The Book of Mormon, Shucked, and Mean Girls.
Ruffin’s Vision: Bigfoot as a Metaphor
Amber Ruffin has spoken about how the character of Bigfoot evolved over the years she was writing the musical. Initially conceived as a broad metaphor, Bigfoot came to represent various marginalized groups. As Ruffin explained in an interview with NPR, “Bigfoot, in my mind, is a Black woman. Bigfoot, in my mind, is a trans person. Then I was like, Bigfoot, in my mind, is just all LGBTQ. Then I was like, Bigfoot is an immigrant.”
A Decade in the Making
The creation of Bigfoot! has been a long-term project for Ruffin and Sciretta, who have been developing the musical for over a decade. The creators aim to balance humor with a genuine emotional core, reimagining the classic American legend in a way that resonates with contemporary audiences.
