Elton John Family Portrait Unveiled at National Portrait Gallery
A recent portrait of Sir Elton John, his husband David Furnish, and their children, Zachary and Elijah, is now on display at the National Portrait Gallery in London. The artwork, created by photographer Catherine Opie, captures the family in their home in Old Windsor, alongside their two Labradors, Joseph and Jacob.
The unveiling of the portrait coincided with the opening of Opie’s exhibition, “Catherine Opie: To Be Seen,” on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
A Family Captured in Art
Sir Elton John and David Furnish expressed their honor at having their family photographed by Opie and featured at the National Portrait Gallery. They described themselves as “huge admirers of her work and proud to have her beautiful and poignant images in our collection.”
Opie shared her experience of meeting the family shortly before Christmas, stating, “I arrived at Elton and David’s house three days before Christmas. I met the boys and the dogs and after a great lunch together, I made this family portrait of them in their library.” She added, “It is truly an honour to photograph Elton, David, Zachary and Elijah. For me, it represents the humanity of what family can be.”
A History of Partnership and Advocacy
Sir Elton John and David Furnish entered into a civil partnership in 2005 and have been parents to Zachary since 2010 and Elijah since 2013. They later married in 2014.
Both Sir Elton John and David Furnish are well-known advocates for LGBTQ+ rights and have actively campaigned against HIV/AIDS through the Elton John AIDS Foundation, raising funds for life-saving programs.
The portrait is located in the gallery’s Mary Weston Gallery.
