China Hunan: A Rising Star in Dublin’s Dining Scene

Dublin’s culinary landscape continues to evolve and the latest addition, China Hunan in Ranelagh, is quickly gaining attention. From the team behind popular establishments like China Song, Hakkahan, and Little Dumpling, this new restaurant promises an authentic and flavorful experience, particularly specializing in Hunan cuisine.

A Pedigree of Flavor

China Hunan is the newest venture from Ryon Wen and Ian Keegan’s IR Entertainment portfolio, which currently includes seven restaurants. Opened just in time for the Chinese New Year of the Horse, the restaurant builds upon the success of its sister restaurant, China Song in Monkstown. Plans are also underway to open a Hot Pot restaurant next door and transform Nan into a Hong Kong-style cafe, further expanding their presence in Dublin’s dining scene.

Ambiance and Design

Stepping into China Hunan is a departure from the rich reds often associated with Chinese restaurants. The interior boasts a more contemporary palette of black, grey, white, and deep green, creating a polished and restrained atmosphere. Dark patterned tiles, marble-topped counters, and deep green upholstered chairs contribute to the sophisticated ambiance. Painted screens featuring traditional landscape imagery add a touch of cultural artistry.

A Culinary Journey

The menu at China Hunan mirrors the structure of China Song, offering a diverse repertoire of Hunan, Sichuan, and Cantonese dishes. Expect a focus on offal and, of course, the signature Peking duck.

Signature Dishes

  • Cantonese Wonton Soup (€9.50): A restorative broth with delicate wontons filled with pork and prawn, complemented by bright bok choi.
  • Crispy Squid, Typhoon Shelter Style (€12): Pale gold and lightly dusted, offering a perfect balance of crispy texture and tender squid.
  • Peking Duck (€88): Air-dried for two days and roasted to perfection, carved tableside, and served with a sweet sugar dip. The duck is served in courses, including the skin, breast, and leg meat, followed by wok-fried duck with crispy edges.
  • Cantonese Charcoal Lava Bun (€9): A steamed black dough filled with golden yolk custard, paired with coconut sorbet for a delightful dessert.

The Verdict

China Hunan is quickly establishing itself as a popular dining destination in Ranelagh. Reviewers praise the restaurant for matching the quality of its sister establishment, China Song, particularly in the execution of the Peking duck. With its refined ambiance and authentic cuisine, China Hunan is a welcome addition to Dublin’s vibrant food scene.
