Tesco Recalls Sand Toys Over Asbestos Concerns

A range of sand toys sold in Tesco stores in Ireland have been recalled due to the potential presence of asbestos, a hazardous substance. The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) issued the recall notice on Thursday, March 6, 2026, following similar action taken in the United Kingdom.

Which Products Are Affected?

The recall impacts four products manufactured by Addo Play Ltd, sold under the ‘Out to Impress’ and ‘Paw Patrol’ brands:

  • Out to Impress Sand Art Creations (barcode 5056289422434, item number 318-19149-B)
  • Out to Impress Creative Candles Craft Set (barcode 5056289428429, item number 318-19180-B)
  • Paw Patrol Sand Art Pictures (barcode 5056289425770, item number 320-14142-N)
  • Paw Patrol Bumper Craft Collection (barcode 5056289425800, item number 320-14145-N)

Why is This Happening?

Asbestos, a group of fibrous minerals, is a banned substance in the European Union due to its significant health risks. Inhaling asbestos fibers can lead to respiratory illnesses and lung conditions, including cancer.

What Should Consumers Do?

The CCPC advises consumers to immediately stop using the recalled products. Specific instructions depend on whether the sand remains in its packaging:

  • Sand in Packaging: Place the sealed package in a heavy-duty plastic bag, label it clearly, and store it out of reach of children.
  • Sand Already Used: Clean areas where the sand was used with wet cloths while wearing gloves and a protective mask. Double-bag the used sand, gloves, mask, and cloths, seal securely, label, and store out of reach of children.

Consumers are also advised to contact their local authority for guidance on proper collection, and disposal.

Refund Information

Tesco is offering refunds for the affected products, and a receipt is not required. Consumers can contact Tesco customer service at 1800 248 123 for more information.
