The Guinigi Tower: A Symbol of Lucca’s History and Resilience

The Guinigi Tower, standing 45 meters (148 feet) high in the heart of Lucca, Italy, is more than just a medieval tower; it’s a testament to the city’s rich history and the ambition of its families. A History Rooted in Power and Prestige

Built in the second half of the 14th century by the Guinigi family, wealthy merchants and bankers, the tower reflects the status and importance of its owners. During the medieval period, families in Lucca competed to build the tallest towers as symbols of their power, and influence. The Guinigi Tower was one of approximately 130 medieval towers that once dotted the Lucca skyline.

Paolo Guinigi, lord of Lucca from 1400 to 1430, further enhanced the tower and the surrounding residence, transforming it into a visible symbol of power and a representation of rebirth.

Architectural Significance and Unique Features

The Guinigi Tower is a prime example of Lucca’s Romanesque-Gothic architecture, constructed from both stone and brick. What truly sets it apart is the hanging garden atop the tower, featuring several holm oaks. The planting of these trees was intended to symbolize renewal and a fresh start for the Guinigi family.

Remarkably, the Guinigi Tower is one of only two towers remaining intact in Lucca, with the other being the Tower of the Hours. All other medieval towers were either demolished or “cut off” during the 16th century.

Visiting the Guinigi Tower Today

Located at the corner of Via Sant’Andrea and Via delle Chiavi d’Oro, the Guinigi Tower is a popular attraction for visitors to Lucca. Access to the garden at the top requires climbing 233 steps via a metal staircase.

Accessibility: The tower is not accessible to people with mobility disabilities, as it does not have a lift.

Hours and Reservations: As of January 31, 2026, the tower is open Monday to Friday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. From February 1st to 28th, hours are 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Reservations are recommended on weekdays and are required on weekends and holidays.

Entrance Fee: An entrance fee is required. The Guinigi Tower participates in the Lucca VisitCard program, which provides access to multiple cultural attractions in the city.
