KIST Appoints Cloud Physics Expert Yeom Seong-soo to Tackle Climate Crisis

The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) has appointed Professor Emeritus Yeom Seong-soo of Yonsei University as a senior researcher at its Climate and Environment Research Institute. This strategic hire underscores KIST’s commitment to developing innovative technologies to address the escalating climate crisis.

Expertise in Cloud Physics

Professor Yeom, a leading researcher in cloud physics, brings 25 years of experience investigating cloud formation processes through atmospheric observation and cloud microphysics research. His work, conducted in collaboration with the Korea Meteorological Administration, has contributed significantly to domestic meteorological advancements and resulted in the publication of 65 research papers over the past decade.1

New Role at KIST

Despite nearing retirement age, Professor Yeom chose to join KIST to contribute to groundbreaking research utilizing a state-of-the-art cloud chamber, scheduled for completion this year. The cloud chamber will allow researchers to artificially recreate cloud environments, enabling detailed investigation of cloud formation processes.1

KIST’s Climate Research Initiatives

Since its launch in 2024, the Climate and Environment Research Institute at KIST has focused on cutting-edge research in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI)-based climate prediction, carbon cycle recovery, and artificial precipitation. Research utilizing the new cloud chamber is considered essential to advancing these technologies.1 The KIST cloud chamber is designed to simulate both convection and expansion types, offering a unique capability for climate engineering technology development.
