Financial Times Enhances Access with Free Registration and Substack Newsletter
The Financial Times (FT) is expanding access to its content through a combination of free registration benefits and a new weekly newsletter on Substack, aimed at attracting a younger investor base. These initiatives, announced in March 2026, build upon existing offerings like the FT Alphaville blog and the Editor’s Digest newsletter.
Free Registration Benefits
New and returning users can now register for free access to a range of FT resources. Registration unlocks the following benefits:
- Free Articles: Access to a selection of articles across FT’s coverage.
- Editor’s Digest & Newsletters: Receive curated news highlights and updates from the FT’s Editor, Roula Khalaf, and other specialized newsletters.
- Personalized Events: The ability to follow specific topics and set up personalized event notifications.

Harvard Business School has also secured a group subscription to FT.com for its students and faculty, providing unlimited access to FT content on both desktop and mobile devices. Learn more about the Harvard Business School subscription.
FT Alphaville Launches Substack Newsletter
FT Alphaville, originally launched in 2006, is now reaching a broader audience with a free weekly newsletter on Substack, debuting on November 21, 2025. The newsletter, released every Friday, combines analysis from Alphaville with financial content from across the web and charts from the wider Financial Times.
This move reflects the FT’s strategy to connect with younger readers already active on the Substack platform, according to Sarah Ebner, Director of Editorial Growth and Engagement. The newsletter is curated by editor Robin Wigglesworth, alongside Louis Ashworth and Bryce Elder, and is designed for “smart, open-minded readers who are curious about markets, economics, and the geeky mechanics of finance.”
Strategic Implications
The FT’s initiatives demonstrate a commitment to expanding its readership and adapting to evolving content consumption habits. By offering free access points and leveraging platforms like Substack, the FT aims to strengthen its position as a leading source of global market intelligence and financial news. The Substack newsletter is not intended to replace the core Alphaville blog, which remains the central hub for the team’s operations. Read more about FT Alphaville’s Substack launch.
