European Road Transport Sector Faces Crisis Amidst Soaring Fuel Prices

European road transport operators are expressing serious concern over a sharp and rapid increase in fuel prices, threatening the financial stability of companies and potentially disrupting the national logistics chain. The Organization of European Road Transporters (OTRE) is calling for urgent intervention from public authorities to mitigate the impact of these rising costs.

Significant Price Hikes in Early March 2026

According to the National Road Committee (CNR) in France, the first week of March 2026 saw substantial increases in professional diesel prices:

• +18% for vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of less than 7.5 tonnes
• +20.3% for road freight transport vehicles with a GVW of 7.5 tonnes or greater
• +21.4% for road passenger transport vehicles with a GVW of 7.5 tonnes or greater

These increases place a significant strain on road transport companies, particularly Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and Very Small Enterprises (VSEs), for whom fuel represents a substantial portion of operating costs.

OTRE Calls for Immediate Action

OTRE is urging public authorities to recognize the urgency of the situation and implement concrete measures to support the sector. The organization is also requesting inclusion in meetings organized by the Ministry of the Economy with oil companies and distributors to discuss potential solutions.

The Role of the CNR

Established in 1949, the National Road Committee (CNR) initially managed the Compulsory Road Pricing system to coordinate rail and road transport. Following the liberalization of transport policy in 1989, it transitioned into a Professional Committee for Economic Development. Its responsibilities have expanded over time, now encompassing the entire road freight sector and, since March 31, 2021, road passenger transport [CNR]. The CNR’s core mission is to observe and analyze the economic aspects of road transportation markets, conduct research, and develop management tools for operators.

European Road Transport Organizations

Several organizations operate at the European level to represent and support the road transport industry. These include:

• ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association): Advocates for the automobile industry, representing manufacturers of cars, vans, trucks, and buses [Fersi].
