Joey Barton Charged with Assault Near Golf Club
Former footballer Joey Barton, 43, and Gary O’Grady, 50, have been charged with wounding with intent following an assault near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club in Merseyside on Sunday evening.
Merseyside Police responded to reports of an assault at approximately 9:00 PM GMT on Sunday, finding a man with injuries to his face and ribs . The victim is currently in serious but stable condition in hospital.
Details of the Incident and Charges
Barton, of Widnes, and O’Grady, of Huyton, are both accused of Section 18 wounding with intent. They are scheduled to appear at Wirral Magistrates Court on Tuesday .
The arrest occurred shortly before a High Court hearing regarding a libel claim involving Barton. Gervase de Wilde, representing Eni Aluko, informed the court that his instructing solicitor received notification of Barton’s arrest from a duty solicitor at a Liverpool police station .

Joey Barton had a notable career as a midfielder, playing for clubs including Manchester City, Newcastle United, Queens Park Rangers, Burnley, and Rangers. He retired from playing in 2017 and transitioned into management, having managed Fleetwood and Bristol Rovers .
