Swiss Authorities Charge Teenager with Planning ISIS-Linked Knife Attack

GENEVA – Swiss prosecutors have charged an 18-year-old Swiss national with planning a terrorist attack using a knife, allegedly in the name of the Islamic State (ISIS) jihadist group. The Office of the Attorney-General of Switzerland (OAG) announced the charges on March 12, 2026, detailing a case that began with an arrest last June.

Details of the Alleged Plot

The teenager, a resident of the canton of Aargau, faces charges of supporting a terrorist organization, preparing for murder, and possessing depictions of violence. According to the OAG, the suspect allegedly planned to carry out a knife attack against randomly selected victims. Investigations revealed that he had taken steps to execute the plan, including ordering a knife online and researching religious justifications for the attack.

Investigation and Release

Swiss federal police first alerted the attorney general’s office last June about evidence suggesting the potential terror attack. The suspect was immediately arrested but released from pre-trial detention in December 2025, as the grounds for his detention were no longer considered sufficient. Though, the OAG’s subsequent investigation determined that the defendant had been planning a terrorist attack in the name of ISIS since around the start of 2025.

Alleged ISIS Support

Beyond the planned attack, the suspect is also accused of supporting ISIS by disseminating propaganda videos on social media and engaging in financial transactions linked to the organization. He also faces charges related to storing and possessing violent imagery.

Legal Proceedings

The case has been transferred to Switzerland’s Federal Criminal Court. The OAG emphasized that the presumption of innocence applies until a final judgment is rendered.

Recent Related Arrests

These charges come amid other recent counter-terrorism efforts in Switzerland. On Thursday, March 13, 2026, Swiss police arrested two individuals suspected of ties to ISIS, following searches of four homes in the cantons of Geneva and Vaud according to the Associated Press. The arrests involved a Swiss-Macedonian dual national and a citizen of Kosovo.

Authorities have not indicated whether these cases are connected.
