Greyhounds’ Mignosa Named League MVP After Overtime Winner

WINDSOR, ON – Soo Greyhounds forward Marco Mignosa is earning league-wide recognition after a standout performance Thursday night, scoring three times – including the overtime winner – to lift his team to a 4-3 victory over the Windsor Spitfires. Greyhounds coach John Dean emphatically stated, “Marco Mignosa’s the MVP of the league. It’s not even close.”

Mignosa Leads Greyhounds to Crucial Win

The game, played at Windsor’s WFCU Centre, saw the Greyhounds overcome an early Spitfires lead. Mignosa’s game-winning goal came on a 3-on-1 rush initiated by a remarkable pass from goaltender Carter George, finding Mignosa who redirected a pass from Brady Martin past Windsor’s Joey Costanzo.

“He’s definitely a massive part of our offence and our leadership,” added forward Brady Martin. “Just the way he plays, it’s huge for us. He’s carried us a long way this season.”

Resilience Amidst Injuries

Dean highlighted Mignosa’s importance to the team, especially given the Greyhounds’ injury challenges this season. “Considering how we’ve been riddled with injuries over the course of the season, the number of linemates he’s had, what he’s had to do on the (penalty) kill for us, we’ve leaned on him so much this season,” Dean explained. “All he does is come through in the clutch.”

Game Recap

The Spitfires opened the scoring with a power-play goal from Anthony Cristoforo in the first period. The Greyhounds responded quickly with a goal from Martin, assisted by Mignosa. Mignosa then scored on the power play in the second period, only for Windsor to equalize shortly after with another goal from Cristoforo. Windsor took the lead through Caden Harvey, before Mignosa tied the game again in the third period.

Mignosa Reaches 300 Games with Greyhounds

The game also marked a significant milestone for Mignosa, as he is set to play his 300th Ontario Hockey League (OHL) game on Friday against the Flint Firebirds, all with the Soo Greyhounds. Only Mike Oliverio has reached this milestone with the franchise. Sault Star reports that Mignosa is just the 145th player in OHL history to reach 300 games.

Looking Ahead

The Greyhounds (38-19-1-5) will face the Flint Firebirds on Friday before returning home to host the Brantford Bulldogs on Sunday. The win over Windsor moves the Greyhounds three points ahead of the London Knights for fourth in the OHL’s Western Conference. Windsor (40-15-6-2) will travel to Sarnia on Friday.

Injury Updates

The Greyhounds are currently without defenceman Brodie McConnell-Barker (illness) and forward Colin Fitzgerald (upper body injury), with Chase Reid also remaining sidelined due to injury.
