Milagros Alastra: Rising Star in Argentine Field Hockey

Milagros Alastra, a rising star in Argentine field hockey, is making significant strides in her career. After being named “Rising Star of the Year” at the 2025 Junior World Cup in Chile, the defender has transitioned to playing with Las Leonas and joined the prestigious GEBA club in Buenos Aires.

From Mendoza to the National Stage

For Alastra, 2026 marks a year of considerable change. Having spent her entire club career at Universidad de Cuyo in Mendoza, she made the tricky decision to move to Buenos Aires to join Gimnasia y Esgrima de Buenos Aires (GEBA) and pursue opportunities with the senior Argentine national team, Las Leonas. This move as well places her alongside Sol Guignet, another promising player who also emerged from the Leoncitas program and now plays for GEBA.

Debut with Las Leonas and GEBA

Alastra was first called up to Las Leonas in January and made her official debut in the February window of the FIH Pro League in Australia. She described the experience as “incredible” and expressed gratitude for the opportunity. Following her return from Australia, she relocated from Mendoza to Buenos Aires with the support of her parents.

Adjusting to a New Environment

Alastra shared her feelings about the transition, stating, “Emotionally I am super upset, it is difficult, I played my whole life for the same club (Universidad de Cuyo) that means a lot to me. It is difficult to represent other colors, but grateful for the opportunity.” She also highlighted the welcoming environment at GEBA, noting, “The group is incredible, I have felt comfortable and accompanied, it is something super new for me to come live here.”

Looking Ahead

Alastra is now competing in the Metro tournament, the highest-level domestic competition in Argentina, while preparing for upcoming commitments with Las Leonas. Fernando Ferrara included Alastra in the 36-player squad for the Pro League double-header in June. The team faced Ireland and Australia in February as part of the FIH Pro League 2025-26 season.
