French Woman Found Burned in Suitcase in Brazil. Partner Found Dead

A 73-year-ancient French woman residing in Brazil was murdered by her partner, and her body was subsequently burned in a suitcase left on a public highway in João Pessoa, the capital of the Brazilian state of Paraíba. The incident, which unfolded in early March 2026, has led to a complex investigation involving local authorities and the French consulate.

Details of the Crime

According to preliminary investigations, the murder occurred on March 8, 2026, at the victim’s apartment. Commissioner Thiago Cavalcanti stated that it was not yet possible to determine if the crime was premeditated, pending the completion of forensic analysis. Initial forensic reports, as indicated by forensic doctor Flavio Fabres, suggest the cause of death was “lesions to the thorax… caused by a blunt object, probably a knife.”

Two days after the murder, the victim’s 59-year-old companion placed her body in a suitcase. Surveillance footage shows him transporting the suitcase from the building in a wealthy neighborhood of João Pessoa. He then allegedly paid a homeless individual to burn the suitcase in a public area, as detailed by Commissioner Cavalcanti.

Companion Found Dead, Possible Retaliation

On March 12, 2026, while police were seeking an arrest warrant for the companion, he was discovered dead, having been “slaughtered.” Investigators are exploring the possibility that he was killed by members of a local criminal faction in retaliation for attracting police attention to the neighborhood where the suitcase was burned.

Commissioner Cavalcanti confirmed that the French authorities had been contacted and were taking steps to locate potential relatives of the victim. The French consulate in Recife has yet to respond to requests for comment.

Relationship History

The victim had lived in Brazil for several years and met her companion, who was previously homeless and sold crafts. They became a couple around 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic and lived together at her residence. The relationship reportedly deteriorated recently due to the companion’s increasing use of narcotics.

Discovery of the Body

The companion reportedly disposed of the body after a neighbor complained about a “smell of putrefaction” emanating from the apartment. He transported the suitcase for approximately half an hour before abandoning it when a wheel broke. He later returned with a container of alcohol and offered 40 reais (approximately €7) to a homeless person to burn the suitcase.

Police are currently searching for the homeless individual who allegedly burned the suitcase.
