Russian Forces Advance in Eastern Ukraine, Capturing Key Villages
Russian troops have secured control of the villages of Sopych in the Sumy region and Kalenyky in the Donetsk region, escalating tensions in eastern Ukraine. The advances come amid conflicting reports regarding the overall state of the frontline and ongoing efforts by Russia to establish buffer zones.
Strategic Gains in Sumy and Donetsk
According to Russia’s Defence Ministry, the armed forces liberated the settlement of Kalenyky in Donetsk and established control over Sopych in the Sumy region. This move is part of a broader strategy to create buffer zones along the northeastern and eastern fronts, as indicated by General Valery Gerasimov.
Sopych: A Border Region Focus
Sopych’s location in the Sumy region, bordering Russia, has made it a focal point for Russian forces attempting to establish a presence in the area for several months. The capture of this village signifies a continued Russian push to expand its influence in the northern border regions.
Kalenyky and Proximity to Sloviansk
Kalenyky is situated east of Sloviansk, a heavily defended city. Gerasimov stated that Russian troops are “actively moving towards Sloviansk.” Reports also indicate alleged forced relocation of residents from Kalenyky into Russian territory.
Ukrainian Response and Drone Warfare
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy asserted that Kyiv’s troops have disrupted a planned Russian offensive, claiming the intensity of attacks fell short of Russian expectations. Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry reported intercepting 421 Ukrainian drones within a 24-hour period, demonstrating an escalation in aerial conflict.
Further Russian Advances
In addition to Sopych and Kalenyky, Russian forces have reportedly advanced in other areas, including entering the Bolshoy Volchy Forest in the Sumy region and consolidating positions in Reznykivka even as fighting for heights near Kryva Luka, as they advance toward Rai-Oleksandrivka. Earlier reports indicated that Russian forces established control over 12 settlements in the first two weeks of March.
The situation remains fluid, with both sides issuing conflicting claims about battlefield successes. The capture of Sopych and Kalenyky represents a tangible gain for Russian forces as they continue to exert pressure on Ukrainian defenses.
