Matthew Schaefer’s Homecoming Game Draws Family and Friends

New York Islanders forward Matthew Schaefer experienced a special moment on March 10, 2026, returning to play a National Hockey League (NHL) game in his hometown. The game drew a significant crowd of friends and family, including those from his youth hockey days.

A Moment to Remember

Schaefer reflected on the emotional experience of playing in front of a hometown crowd, stating, “To finally step onto that ice, that was awesome.” He paused to take in the atmosphere, recalling memories of attending games as a child.

Overwhelming Support

Despite initially predicting a turnout of around 1,000 supporters, Schaefer acknowledged he may have been optimistic, but expressed gratitude for the substantial number of people who came to cheer him on. The support was evident during warmups, with many familiar faces in the stands.

Connections to the Past

Among those in attendance was Brady Scriven, the brother of Schaefer’s best friend, Ryan. Brady, a goalie for the Brantford 99ers U12 AAA minor hockey team, had a memorable encounter with Schaefer when the Islanders forward tossed him a puck, leading to a scramble among the young players.

Schaefer’s family was also present, including his father, Todd, older brother, Johnny, and grandmother, Marianne, who watched her grandson play in an NHL game live for the first time. Several of Schaefer’s former school teachers were also in the audience.

Schaefer’s Skating Ability

Schaefer’s performance on the ice is also noteworthy. NHL EDGE recently highlighted his elite skating ability, which is a key component of his game. NHL EDGE: Schaefer’s elite skating ability
