PlayStation Portal Receives Major Update with 1080p High Quality Mode and Cloud Streaming Enhancements

Sony has released a significant software update for the PlayStation Portal remote player, rolling out globally starting March 18th, 2026. The update introduces a new 1080p High Quality mode for both Remote Play and Cloud Streaming, alongside several usability improvements designed to enhance the overall user experience.

1080p High Quality Mode for Enhanced Visuals

The headline feature of this update is the addition of a 1080p High Quality mode. This new option allows players to stream games at a higher bitrate compared to the existing 1080p Standard mode, resulting in a smoother and more visually detailed experience [PlayStation Blog]. To enable the mode, users can navigate to the Quick Menu, select “Max Resolution,” and choose “1080p High Quality.” A restart of the Remote Play or Cloud Streaming session is required for the changes to grab effect.

Refined Cloud Streaming Experience

Beyond the visual upgrade, Sony has focused on improving the cloud streaming experience. Several enhancements have been implemented to reduce friction and improve usability [Push Square]. These include:

  • Improved Product Detail Page: When selecting “Stream” on game bundle pages, a new user interface now allows players to directly select the specific game they wish to play from the bundle.
  • Game Invite Notifications: Players actively streaming supported titles will now receive clear on-screen notifications when receiving game invites, ensuring they don’t miss opportunities to join friends.
  • Enhanced Trophy Notifications: Trophy notifications have been updated to clearly display the trophy name and associated image upon unlocking. Platinum trophies will now feature a special animation to celebrate achievements.
  • Improved Search Screen: The search interface has been refined, with the on-screen keyboard now appearing immediately when initiating a search.

Growing PlayStation Plus Premium Adoption

Sony reports strong momentum for the PlayStation Portal, with Cloud Streaming monthly users growing by 162% year-over-year in January. Over 50% of PlayStation Portal users are now subscribers to PlayStation Plus Premium, indicating a strong engagement with the cloud gaming experience [PlayStation Blog].

Simplified Account Creation

The update similarly streamlines the initial setup process for new PlayStation Portal owners. Users who don’t already have a PlayStation account can now create one and log in by scanning a QR code with their mobile device [PlayStation Lifestyle]. Though, a PS5 console or a PlayStation Plus Premium membership is still required to utilize the Portal’s full functionality.

This latest update demonstrates Sony’s commitment to continuously refining the PlayStation Portal experience, solidifying its position as a key component of the PlayStation ecosystem.
