Tim Tszyu Shifts Training Base, Focuses on Spence Jr. Showdown Amid Legal Battle

Tim Tszyu’s preparation for a potential fight with Errol Spence Jr. Has taken an unexpected turn, as the former world champion has moved his training camp from the Rockdale gym – a facility synonymous with his family’s boxing legacy – to a private gym in Caringbah, Australia. This change comes as Tszyu prepares for his Easter Sunday fight against Denis Nurja on April 5th in Wollongong, and navigates an ongoing legal dispute with former manager Glen Jennings.

Breaking with Tradition

For over 30 years, the Rockdale gym has been the heart of the Tszyu boxing family, initially established by Hall of Fame father Kostya Tszyu and more recently used by Tim and his brother Nikita. Tszyu’s decision to train elsewhere marks a significant departure from this long-standing tradition. The move is reportedly intended to provide a more convenient location closer to home, though Tszyu has stressed it is not a permanent change.

Legal Battle with Former Manager

Adding another layer to Tszyu’s preparations is a legal battle with his former manager, Glen Jennings. The dispute, which could end up in the NSW Supreme Court, stems from an alleged breach of contract. Tszyu confirmed that his legal team is now handling the matter, allowing him to remain focused on his upcoming fight against Nurja.

New Coaching and Training Regimen

Tszyu is working with new Cuban coach Pedro Diaz, who holds a Ph.D. In Pedagogical Sciences. This partnership has led to a significant overhaul of Tszyu’s training style and conditioning. Diaz has implemented a revised sparring program that has reportedly alleviated persistent neck, shoulder, and hip issues that plagued Tszyu following losses to Sebastian Fundora and Bakhram Murtazaliev. Tszyu noted improvements in his physical condition, stating his hips “aren’t clicking anymore.”

Preparing for Spence Jr.

Despite the immediate focus on Nurja, Tszyu and Diaz are already incorporating game planning for a potential fight against Errol Spence Jr., a southpaw. Tszyu’s team has even considered using a left-handed sparring partner to prepare, though finding a suitable opponent proved challenging. A potential fight between Tszyu and Spence Jr. Is currently slated for June 6th or June 13th in Australia, with potential host cities including the Gold Coast, Brisbane, and Sydney.

Nurja as a Stepping Stone

A win against Nurja will position Tszyu as the No.1 contender for Xander Zayas, who currently holds the WBO and WBA straps. Tszyu emphasized the importance of this fight as a crucial step towards regaining a world title.

Shift in Training Philosophy

Tszyu highlighted a shift in his training philosophy, moving away from solely relying on physical abilities to incorporating more strategic and technical work. He credits Diaz with helping him “switch [his] brain back on,” focusing on game plans and technical adjustments rather than simply pushing physical limits.
